Renee Callaway
Race Category: Sport
What races in 2009: One or two WEMS races, the Cable Off-Road Classic,
Chequamegon 40, and lots and lots of cross races. Plus a bunch of cross
country ski races and whatever other exciting things come along.
Occupation: Safe Routes to School Coordinator at the Wisconsin Dept of
Transportation.
Safe Routes to School is a program that works to get kids
to walk and bike to school.
Mountain Bike: Santa Cruz Juliana (purple, of course)
Years Racing: I did my first race in 1990 (yikes!) and have been racing
ever since. In 1992 I was 3rd Overall in the Beginner Women 18-34 in the
WORS series. I also race on the road and cyclocross with the
Capitol Velo Club. However,
my racing passion these days is for cyclocross.
Training/Racing Tip: You can race and never train or you can race and
train. I've done it both ways and racing is a lot easier when you train.
However, racing can still be fun even when you don't train because you are doing
something with your friends in the great outdoors. It beats going to the
mall either way! Oh yeah, and ride your bike to work. It will change
your life.
Favorite Trail/Race: In Wisconsin I like both the Reforestation Camp
outside Green Bay and the Standing Rocks trails in Plover. I love the
trails in the Keweenaw Peninsula of the UP as well especially the fast, flowy
trails at Swedetown.
My favorite
race was probably the 2006 Whitewater cross race where out of nowhere I took 3rd
in the Cat 1/2 race. I didn't even know I had it in me to finish that
well.
Hobbies other than cycling: Being the President of both the Mad FORCs and
the Capitol Velo Club I don't have much time for hobbies outside cycling.
However, I also am involved with the Madison Nordic Ski club and really enjoy
spending my winter playing in the snow. You can find me rollerskiing when
I'm not on the bike.
